When Janet is propositioned to give the naked man who came into her ER earlier a ride home, every instinct that keeps the intelligent, attractive nurse healthy should tell her to say no. But something in her responds to Max in a very primal way. Considering he is furry when the moon goes full, she has no idea how primal her response really is.

Max finds it amusing when he learns that the attractive nurse is allergic to dogs, but since he is a wolf, not a dog, his need for her should cause no issues. He has found his soul mate in the lush nurse.

Together they must defeat his nemesis, who has marked her as his next kill. If they manage this and save his family, their love may stand a chance. But only if he can make her his mate, Before The Moon Rises.

Full of humor and sexual tension, I found this book an exceptionally fun read. Max is a vibrant character who rips his way into the reader’s heart with one tilt of his furry head. The characters are full of life from the leads down to Cat. The only drawback was that the ending felt rushed. If it was more smoothed out, this review would easily have been 5 cups.

Richard stopped Kate before she could follow. His dark eyes searched hers.

“How are you holding up?”

Richard appeared to be watching her like an uncertain child on their first day at school. “My life is spinning out of control.” Her words expressed her frustration. “I don’t know you, I don’t know your family, yet here I am... At your mercy.”

“If there was another way...”

“Is there?”

He shook his head. “None that I can see. You and Joey will be safe here.”

“For how long, Richard?” Kate swallowed the knot in her throat. She didn’t want to cry again. She was tired of crying yet her eyes burned all the same.

He moved closer, caught her chin, and forced her eyes to his. “As long as it takes.”

“I don’t want to impose.”

“You’re not an imposition,” he assured her.

She could see the sincerity of his emotion. His caring eyes made her believe him. She didn’t understand his motives. Why did he care what happened to them?

Richard stroked the pad of his thumb over her cheek, his lips parted as if he wanted to say something. He didn’t. Instead, his head dipped lower, his eyes questioned.

Oh, God. He’s going to kiss me, she thought. Part of her wanted to back away, a very small part of her. The bigger part, however, wanted nothing more than to feel his lips on hers.

Werewolf, Max Ritter notices the sassy nurse when he wakes after a night under the full moon. Unfortunately, his archrival is drawn to Janet as well. In order to keep her out of harm's way, he opts to keep her close. When the chemistry between them sparks, Max discovers a completely new reason to keep Janet safe.

When an injured, and naked man is brought into the emergency room where Janet works that last thing she is expecting is to end up going home with him and getting into the middle of some odd turf war.

Max has been hunting for Gormon for some time now. The rogue has been turning people and killing and has to be stopped. Max and his pack are hunting this monster and little does Max know that when he ends up in the hospital that he will meet his mate and find the resolution to the Gormon problem.

Catherine Bybee has created a shadow world of rich characters and a vibrant storyline. The characters are endearing and will tug at your heart while you find yourself immersed in this fantastic story.

I think what I appreciated the most about Before the Moon Rises is the level of belief I had in the characters. Catherine Bybee does a beautiful job of bring Janet to life and from there I found myself getting sucked into the story. It was easy to picture the ER and the tired RN trying to make it through that dreaded last hour before end of shift. I could easily imagine the stunning Max coming along as a wonderful highlight and complication to her day!

In the end BTMR turned out to be a lovely `short and sweet' shifter romance. The world building was remarkable complete and yet not so overwhelming as to detract from the plot. The character were very nicely portrayed and the interactions and relationships did not feel overly forced or expedient but rather just seemed to fall into place naturally, no mean feat for such a short piece.

Overall a nicely written story with a very believable RN and a gorgeous wolf shifter.

Thus, it is not surprising that she saves a child from an abductor and helps the police catch the perp.

FBI agent Nick Murdock comes to the Sequoias due to the kidnapping case. When he sees Kari, she immediately touches his heart as no woman ever had before. She is an enigma to him, and being a good FBI agent, he plans to get to the bottom of it. After all, her secret is keeping them apart.

For a novella, Soul Mate delivers a knock-out punch. The plot is well-thought out, and from the very first page, I was caught up in the story. Kari’s situation definitely touched my heart. She turns a bad experience into something she can use for good. Certainly a perfect heroine! And how can you not like Nick? His relentless pursuit of Kari makes him an ideal partner for her. I truly enjoyed this novella, and I am pretty sure you will, too.

My first peer review.

As I sit back and wait for Friday to come I received my first peer review of Soul Mate from Angel Martinez. I mentioned in my recent video blog how important I thought doing review were in the grand scheme of things. A wonderful side bar to that, is how happy your reviews make the author feel. So, here is my very first review.

Most werewolf stories focus on the 'infection' - the events leading up to and following the change, the how and why and the mechanics of it. In Soul Mate, while the were aspect is vital to the story and Kari is perhaps the most lupine character I have ever met, the nitty-gritty of lycanthropy does not overshadow plot and character development.

Ms. Bybee does a wonderful job with the slow reveal, allowing the reader to discover the characters in a natural progression rather than having them dumped in the reader's lap, no mean feat for a short piece. Through dialogue and interaction, we become privy to Kari's necessary wariness, her suspicion, her purposeful walls, while Nick, who appears a touch arrogant and invasive at first, reveals his courage, his persistence and a steadfastness worthy of a tin soldier.

A fast-paced, smoothly progressing read, this is not your typical werewolf story. Laced with humor and moments of heated sensuality, it's well worth the time to devour.

After wiping a hand on her napkin, she reached over. “Kari.”
Small, soft, and confident, again, not the combination he expected. By his estimates, she couldn’t be more than one hundred and twenty pounds yet she shook hands like a politician. She let go all too quickly, but not before he felt her pulse quicken. “Just Kari?”
“A girl can never be too careful, even to seemingly innocent men who wear FBI jackets in a Podunk diner.” Raising her fork she pointed to the paper with the dark headline, “You must be here because of that missing girl.”
Small, soft, confident, and he needed to add smart. Nick was impressed. “Found girl,” he corrected.
“Oh, I didn’t hear she’d been found. She’s all right I hope.”
“Safe with her parents as we speak.”
Kari nodded and finished the last of her pancakes, which meant she’d be leaving soon. He hadn’t placed her yet and didn’t want her to leave. “So, you must be here on vacation.”
She put down her fork and stared across the counter at the wall. “Maybe I live here.”
Nick shook his head. “You called this a Podunk diner. Your shoes are meant for walking on Rodeo Drive and not the trails of the forest.” He leaned forward and sniffed. “And you smell like expensive perfume, not bug spray. No, Kari, I don’t think you live here.” Odd though, she wasn’t wearing a ring and didn’t have any trailing boyfriend or children at her side. Vacationing alone in the Sequoias struck him as odd.
“This is a nice place to visit,” she clipped out as she reached inside her purse. Removing a ten-dollar bill and placing it by her plate, she stood up. “It was nice talking to you, Mr. Murdock. I’m glad the girl came back to you safe and sound.”
“Leaving already?”
Her smile was lethal, her laugh seductive. “I need to get back to Rodeo; Gucci is calling out to me.”
His chest rumbled in laughter.
As she walked away, his eyes followed the gentle sway of her hips. Damn, she was something to watch.
Once out of sight, he turned in his seat and brought the coffee cup to his lips. As he swallowed, his eyes landed on the car keys sitting next to Kari’s empty plate.
With a wicked smile, he covered them with his hand and headed toward the door.
Outside he watched her fumbling through her purse while standing in front of a four-wheel drive rental car. A strand of blonde hair slid over her face; she tossed it back in frustration and mumbled a curse.
“Looking for these?” He held up the keys and shook them with a jingle.
Her head shot up, eyes narrowed.
“You left them on the counter,” he found himself explaining.
Taking a step in his direction, she reached out to capture them from his fingers. Nick playfully pulled them out of reach. She cocked her head to the side and dropped her hand.
“Have dinner with me,” he spoke before she could say anything.
“What?” She looked at him as if he was crazy.
“You know, dinner. Kind of like breakfast, only later and with wine.”
“Are you always so forward, Mr. Murdock?”
“Nick.”
“Are you always so forward, Nick?” she emphasized his name to express her annoyance.
“I believe in being direct.”
She took another step in his direction and smoothed her hair back. Her tongue shot out and moistened her lips. The action shot heat to his groin. “I’m glad to hear that, Nick. I believe in being direct, too.” Stepping closer, she brought one hand up between them, tilted her head back to gaze into his eyes. Low lashes fluttered in a way that proved she knew her affect on him.
A small shock registered when she trailed a finger down his arm. “I think you are very attractive.”
“That’s a start.” His voice grew husky. “But...”
“But,” she sighed and walked her fingers down his arm. “I don’t like being held hostage for a date.” With that, she grabbed her keys from his hand and turned to walk away.
