A year later and look at this...

Kilt Worthy was released in August of 2009 and this arrived in my inbox this week. Nice to see that my work is still being reviewed and enjoyed.

Got Erotic Romance gave Logan and Jane 4.5 diamonds.

When Jane spots the handsome hunk through her camera lens she is spell bound. Even more surprising is when Logan takes notice of her and begins his seduction.

This short story packs a punch. Its characters are full of emotion and depth making it a sweet read. Jane is a smart woman who has some confidence issues and Logan is just the man to help her. He sees what a beautiful woman Jane is inside and out. Logan takes his time showing Jane just what he really thinks of her. Watching these two begin to make their bond was a great read. Showing us that a knight in shining armor or should I say a kilt can find us when we last expect it.

This is an older book from this author but it still stands the test of time. Well written and with an unexpected twist this is a book that should not be missed. If you have not checked out Catherine Bybee’s books you should definitely give them a try. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the works I have read from this author and am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series.

“My father is very protective.”

“Does your father know you’re here?”

“Much to his dismay, but we had no choice.”

Interesting, a protective father who sent his
daughter away to a different country without any
money. Something wasn’t lining up.

They were within a block of his home when
Myra stiffened, and all color washed from her face.

She stopped and spun in a slow circle.

“What is it?”

“Someone is watching us.”

“Some of the neighbors are busybodies.”

“No, Todd. The one who watches wants more
than to gossip.”

Now the hair on his neck stood on end.

Hi, Catherine, I’m excited to be here visiting your blog. Everything looks so . . . sensual here. (WINK)

Fran, tell us a little about yourself and the arm of TWRP that you work for.

I’m delighted to say I’m a Faery Rose Editor for The Wild Rose Press. (I thought I’d get wings with the job, but they haven’t spouted yet.) This month marks my second anniversary with the company. In our department, we work on romance books about witches, ghosts, ESP, time-travel, Sci-fi, seraphs, nymphs, and oh, yes, fairies. If it’s not of our realm, and it’s not a demon, vampire or shape-shifter, it’s probably something we would handle. The variety of the material is what holds my interest.

What do you enjoy most about your job? What do you like the least?

Of course the best part of my job is discovering a talented new author and contracting her or him for the first time. You can’t beat the high of sharing that moment with someone.
Conversely, I HATE rejections in general, but specifically I don’t like rejecting a well-written, interesting story because it doesn’t meet TWRP guidelines. We publish romance, so the manuscript should be a romance with a happily ever after for the hero and heroine. New authors should check our guidelines and each department’s to see if their book is a good fit for us.
I recommend new authors read books published by the press they are submitting to. Publishers have a BRAND, something their readers come to know and trust. That’s why as an editor for our company it’s so important for me to know when I select a book to contract, the readers will get what they expect.

Another plus is I get to work with so many talented authors and editors.

What are you looking for in a new author?

I’m looking for what every reader wants, a story that hooks me from the first sentence, drags me into the plot, and makes me care about what happens to the characters right up to the happily ever after. That being said, typos, grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes will inevitably distract from the story.

Where do you see e-publishing going in the next 3 to 5 years?

Oh, this is the big question isn’t it? E-publishing is the future. Apparently I’m not the only one who believes this, since most of the big traditional houses have jumped into the e-market recently. The technology fields are clamoring to catch up with the development of e-readers. Don’t get me wrong, I also believe there will always be the die-hard paper book reader. I can almost see a distant future where we handle the few remaining bound books with reverence.
If you could change one thing about the publishing world, what would it be? The amount of time it takes for a book to get to market. I’m an instant gratification kind of girl. As a reader and an editor, I can’t wait until the next book comes out by my favorite author. (I.E. More authors would get published)

What is your biggest pet-peeve about a manuscript?

Great story, lousy formatting. I want to give every manuscript a fair chance, but if I’ve got to wade through mistakes, page breaks, line breaks, no breaks and bad punctuation, I’m going to wonder why the author didn’t care enough about her own manuscript to take the time to do it right.

Unedited excerpt of Kilt-a-licious! All mistakes are mine and mine alone.

Sheri felt the room closing in. She lost control of this conversation and she didn’t like it. Not one bit.

“Maybe I’ll want two men?”

Chase pulled up one edge of his mouth in a half smile. “At the same time, lass?”

She swallowed. He was calling her bluff. Anxiety brought her skin to a stand with the hair firmly flying in the air. “Maybe.”

Slow and steady, Chase lowered his hands and advanced.

Sheri slid toward the wall.

“There are two men with ye now, love. Perhaps we can purge ye of these desires.”

She gulped. A big fat audible gulp that Jason had to of heard in the other room. “Maybe.”

Chase placed one strong hand on the wall by her head and dipped closer, his lips mere inches from hers. “There is only one thing, love.”

“Yes,” she said on a breath.

“Don’t ask anything of me that you won’t give in return.”

Oh, God. She was officially screwed.

For a moment, neither of them moved, blinked or breathed. Then a voice from the hall rang out.

“So, am I joining this party or should I go?”

Chase was calling her bluff, or hand or whatever metaphor worked. Or maybe he was pushing her further. Perhaps he’d back off the minute she let Jason touch her. Remembering his insane jealousy at the bar, Sheri puffed her chest out, grazing his.

“Do you have condoms, Jason?”

The smile didn’t leave Chase’s face, but one eyebrow rose high.

He’ll fold.

“Never leave home without them.”

One second passed, then two. Chase said nothing.

Sheri had one more hand to play. She lifted her lips to his ear so only he could hear. “Be warned, Jason enjoys men and women in his bed.” With those little words, Sheri stepped out of Chase’s arms and walked over to Jason who stood blocking the hallway.

Tell us about your new book out now:

First of all, I’d like to thank you, Catherine, for inviting me to your blog. My book, Erin’s Rebel is my first romance novel and a Civil War time travel. I started work on the manuscript nearly ten years ago, when I first envisioned a modern day heroine being thrust into a Confederate army camp during the Civil War. The hard part for me was getting the time travel to work so the reader could suspend belief and go along for the ride. It took a lot of revising, but I finally got it right. It has sort of a time travel, reincarnation theme.

Here’s the blurb:

Philadelphia newspaper reporter, Erin Branigan, is engaged to marry an up-and-coming lawyer, but dreams of a man from the past change those plans and start her on a journey beyond time. After a car accident, Erin wakes to find herself living in the 1860s in a Confederate army camp.

Captain Will Montgomery, the man of her dreams, is now a flesh and blood Rebel soldier who sets her soul aflame. But the Irish beauty holds a secret he needs to unravel before he can place his trust in her. Can she correct a mistake made long ago that caused his death and denied her the love she was meant to have? Or is she doomed to live out her life with nothing but regret?

And here’s a short excerpt:

The sound of her name on his lips made her skin tingle. She tore the paper off the package. At the sight of the brooch, her breath caught.

“Do you like it?” he asked anxiously. “I had it made just for you.”

Eyeing him, she had a hard time finding her voice. This was Erin O’Connell’s brooch, the very one that had sent her back in time. It shone in her hands, new and unworn from time and wear.

What did this mean? She must be following Erin O’Connell’s footsteps. As far as she knew her being here hadn’t changed anything. Will was still destined to die this year.

“I didn’t mean to upset you, Erin. If you don’t want the brooch—”

“No.” She clasped the brooch against her chest as the meaning of his gift sank in. “It just means so much to me.”

His look of concern softened into a lopsided grin. “I’m happy you feel this way.”

“Thank you, Will.” She slipped the brooch into the pocket of her wrapper, then stood on her toes, lifting her arms to circle his neck. She kissed his cheek, inhaling his musky scent.

His mouth was on hers, hot and urgent. The softness of his moustache and chin beard tickled her lips. She opened to him, her tongue slipping inside to taste him thoroughly. He groaned, pressing the length of his body against her.

How do you respond when someone says… “Oh, you write THAT kind of book?”

Actually, I’ve never had that experience. Everyone seems impressed when I tell them I’m writing romance novels, and while Erin’s Rebel is a spicy romance, my stories vary from sweet to spicy. I don’t write hot, not because I think there’s anything wrong with that, but I just don’t feel qualified. I’ll leave hot to the expert writers, who do it very well. But if I were confronted with someone asking why I write romance, I’d have to say I write stories of adventure and love and they always have a happy ending. Who could ask for anything more than to be entertained, thrilled and to have a book end on a satisfying note?

What are your goals as a writer?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, and my biggest ambition is to have people read my stories and be entertained. I have lots of stories swirling in my head and plan to write for as long as I can sit at my computer and type. It’s fun!

How many books to you read in a month?

I don’t get a lot of time to read for pleasure, but I do make it a point to set aside time each weekend to read. On average, I’d say one or two complete novels in a month.

Do you have anything new in the works?

Right now, I’ve got four releases coming out this year, one full-length historical, Confederate Rose, and three short stories, two of which will be included in historical romance anthologies. The first is called Northern Roses and Southern Belles, the other An American Rose Christmas. I also have a short vampire story, Sweet Redemption, that will be a stand-alone e-book. I’m also working on two new projects. One’s a post Civil War romance that is an offshoot of a young adult novel I had published years ago and is now out of print. The other is my first ever science fiction romance.

Interview With Delilah K. Stephans

Today my special guest is debut author Delilah K. Stephans. Delilah is a fellow Red Rose Publishing author and on top of that her new novella, Sarah's Story is a time travel romance. My personal favorite genre.

Welcome Delilah, and please tell us about your book.

Sarah's Story is the first in a Time Travel series. Time Travel has always fascinated me and I ended up postulating my own theory of how it could be accomplished. This series takes that theory and puts it to work - putting researchers back in the past to observe events and get the truth of history. Sarah was sent back to observe the years prior to the American Civil War but she was never retrieved. Matthew is the top Retrieval Agent at the agency and has been sent back to locate her - even his bosses didn't expect him to find her.

I have to tell you... after reading the excerpt this hit my top 'need to be read' list.

How do you respond when someone says... "Oh, you write THAT kind of book.."

Haven't had that happen yet... But my answer would be - I write what I enjoy reading. My books aren't erotica, they are more sensual romances than erotic - I'm working on that. Romance novels have always had a bad reputation among the literary minded - but they are the guilty secret of millions of women and a few men.

What are your goals as a writer?

I have several goals.

1. To entertain the readers
2. To banish my shyness at writing sex scenes.
3. Increase my word count - I tend to be very compact in word use which keeps my word count low.
4. To increase the complexity of my stories - it's there but I'm not sure the reader sees it.

There are a few others - To join RWA, to attend the RWA conference and to attend the RT Convention

How many books do you read a month? Are they all romance?

I read about 30 books a month - yep I'm a book a day person. Most are paranormal romances with a few romantic suspense and historicals thrown in for variety but I do read some fiction particularly the Kathy Reichs Temperance Brennan novels and the occasional non-fiction - usually books on how to write.

Wow! That is a lot of books. Good for you!
Do you have anything new in the works?

I have several things in the works. A Vampire story that has been a 3 year project and is finally one fight and HEA away from being done.
A soft BDSM short, I say soft because it doesn't really fit a lot of what I've read of BDSM novels - think more along the lines of Diane Whiteside's Irish Devil just a bit more explicit
A Romantic Suspense is in the early planning stages - I've met the hero and heroine, know the where and what - still figuring out the whys and hows.
I also have a co-written book releasing November 2nd called Black Velvet from Lyrical Press which is about a race of Dragon shifters.

"Where are you going, Tara ?"

"Out!"

"I can see that, but where?" She stopped and turned. "Far away from you."

He almost collided with her. Before he could react, she was storming off again, as he shouted, "A lady is not safe out here by herself."

She stopped. This time he didn't stop in time and fell into her.

Hands at her sides, her chest thrust up next to his she gritted between her teeth. "A lady isn't safe around you either."

" Now , Tara ." He tried pleading with her.

"Oh, don't you even ..now, Tara ' me." She stepped to the side and started off, in a different direction. Stalking in circles.

He let her walk for several minutes before attempting to speak to her again. "I would be happy to escort you on a walk. But, we need to get you more properly dressed." He knew the effect watching her walk in tight jeans was having on him, he could only imagine what his men must have thought when she stormed the courtyard.

"You're a bastard, you know that MacCoinnich? "

He wanted to counter what she said, but cautioned himself against it. "Still, we need you in more fitting clothes. If someone were to come along, questions would be raised which would be most difficult to answer."

"You should have thought of that before you brought me here." She waved a hand in his general direction. "Right now, I don't give a crap what questions you might have to answer."

"I told you how necessary it is for secrecy." He turned to the Keep and noticed some of the men watching, curious about what would happen. He needed to put a stop to this and soon.

"Bite me."

A completely inappropriate image of him doing exactly that popped into his head. A slow lazy smile inched over his lips. Unfortunately, for him, Tara read his thoughts. She didn't find them nearly as entertaining as he did.

"You ass..." She raised her hand to slap his face.

He caught her hand before it made contact.. "I've had enough of this."
