Yes...it is my Birthday Week. Why celebrate coming into this world with one day? That's my question. My official Birthday is tomorrow. I'm a May Day baby. Although most people don't even know what May Day is.
Here is what Wikipedia says about where May Day started:
The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, and the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. It is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane. Many pagan celebrations were abandoned or Christianized during the process of conversion in Europe. A more secular version of May Day continues to be observed in Europe and America. In this form, May Day may be best known for its tradition of dancing the maypole dance and crowning of the Queen of the May. Various Neopagan groups celebrate reconstructed (to varying degrees) versions of these customs on May 1st.
I've never danced the maypole...although my husband might argue. Oh, wait...that's TMI - scratch that. I do like flowers however, and sometimes I even get them on my birthday.
Birthdays are special days we have to spend on us. It's the one day a year when it's okay to be a little selfish and indulge yourself. Instead of doing much of that, I'm going to be running around with family obligations and my children's after school activities. Hence the Birthday Week. If I can't get my day... I'll take a week!
So, dear reader, what do you love to do for your birthday? Do you have a special dinner you look forward to? A special tradition? What do you do for yourself every year on your birthday?
